Just come across a bunch of articles about pharmaceutical drugs recently, all of which are quite disturbing and I thought I'd share -cause ya know, misery loves company.
We'll start out with one that shouldn't be surprising really. The fact that drug companies market "easy fixes" for things that are not really diseases is, I think, widely known.
But of course it goes farther. This one's an interview with a newly released book disparaging the pharmaceutical industry and its pet psychiatrists, not just for inventing new disorders, but actually creating mental health issues by not looking at the long term effects of the drugs it massively over prescribes.
Or, if you're not far enough out of your mind with paranoia over our chemically induced society yet, here's one one about the Pentagon wanting to use a drug to make soldiers immune to the effects of PTSD by turning them essentially into moral zombies.
I'm not saying here that some people don't legitimately need psychiatric medications, and anyone who knows me personally will tell you that I'm a staunch advocate of chemical assistance in getting a grip on your personal psychological issues, but our minds and bodies are not something we should allow the pharmaceutical industry to convince us of the necessity of pumping full of all but untested chemicals. The only benefit there is to their pocketbooks.

A nice collection of links. I was recalling my inactivity on the site just yesterday, perhaps in recognition of your return, and I'd like to get together to discuss some changes to the site.
ReplyDeleteI like what this is right now, kind of a depository for societal musings and news stories, but I find even myself going to other sources for information and failing to return here for posting. This is perhaps just a personal failing, but I'd still like to discuss possible changes to invigorate things, and get a wider circle of people regularly checking the site!
One idea - really honing in on the different aspects of this society that are utterly and completely insane, corrupt, evil and stupid. Big-Pharma, Education, Foreign Policies, Native History, and Food just to name some big ones. Tagging is OK, but we should make better use of it. So we categorize and organize these more thoroughly, present them a certain way on the site individually to increase impact, taking the perspective that we are all moderately evil for depending on these completely false histories and ubiquitous corporate structures for our personal survival.
